4. If you have a nickel metal hydride battery, then you should completely drain and recharge your battery once a month so that you maximize it's capacity to hold a charge.

These are some wonderful tips to extend the lives of batteries, I think now a days they're not as expensive as they were before but no doubt considerably expensive and technology is at a very rapid pace so 2-3 years old laptop batteries becomes difficult to find hence we should save it as much as possible and use it properly. Although there is some advice that points to not using the laptop plugged in the reality is that many people (including myself) do exactly that. I think it is just worth remembering that you might not get as much overall life from your battery. More modern chargers and batteries don't seem to be as susceptible as older ones, so I don't tend to worry as much.
